GRANTS IN ACTION: Bringing Creativity to the Community with ARTBike
With the support of a 2025 spring grant from Community Foundation Grey Bruce, Southampton Arts successfully delivered the ARTBike initiative: a mobile, community-based arts program that brought free, hands-on creative experiences directly to public spaces across the community. ARTBike is designed to remove barriers to participation by meeting people where they are. Through its mobile delivery model, the program encourages creativity, connection, and engagement in an accessible and welcoming way for children, families, and visitors.
Expanding Access to Free Arts Programming
Grant funding supported the purchase of sustainable art supplies for free drop-in activities, as well as essential equipment needed to deliver programming safely and comfortably throughout the summer season. This included replacing a damaged umbrella pole and purchasing a chair for the ArtBike Jockey, ensuring consistent, high-quality delivery at each event. Throughout the summer, ARTBike attended numerous community events, including the Marine Heritage Festival, Cruisers Night, the PRANCE Craft Show, Comic Con, Southampton Arts Festival, and Canada Day celebrations. At these events, more than 600 children, along with their parents and caregivers, participated in free art activities that emphasized seasonal and environmental themes.
By the end of the season, ARTBike had directly engaged more than 600 children and reached over 1,000 community members in total. The program complemented existing community events by offering creative engagement that enhanced the overall visitor experience, while ensuring accessibility through no-cost participation. In addition to fostering creativity, ARTBike helped build awareness of sustainability through eco-friendly craft activities and materials. The consistent presence of ARTBike across multiple events strengthened community connection and encouraged repeat participation from families.
Voices from the Community
The impact of ARTBike was felt deeply by participants and community members alike. One grandparent shared:
“My four grandchildren entered the art contest this week. They sat out the front of the school and coloured for well over an hour. I think this was the highlight of my week with them. Their great grandma started their art development, and thank you for this opportunity to keep it going for them.” — V. Anderson
The 2025 ArtBike Jockey had this to say about the program’s broader value:
?“Community engagement is by far the goal where the ArtBike can go the furthest. It is easy to approach, and at every event we hear from community members about how well run it is and how much their kids love it.”
Rolling Out Lasting Impact
By supporting ARTBike: Rolling Out Creativity Across Our Community, Community Foundation Grey Bruce helped strengthen cultural connection, encourage creativity, and enhance the vibrancy of community events across the region. This investment demonstrates how accessible, mobile arts programming can inspire participation, support local tourism, and build pride in a welcoming and creative community. We are proud to support initiatives that bring art, joy, and connection directly to the community they serve.
