Hugh A. Krentz Student Award

The Hugh A. Krentz Student Award is a national award established in 2015 to honour his contributions as a member of the CWB Group Board of Directors and his passion and leadership related to the development and use of construction standards. These contributions made a significant impact in protecting public safety. In addition to his service on the CWB Group Board of Directors, he also served as president of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction from 1978 to 2001 and as the Chairman of the Standards Council of Canada from 2001 to 2011.

This award will be given to a Canadian student entering their final year of study in a minimum two-year welding undergraduate program who shows exemplary academic excellence, a demonstrated passion for welding and career interest in the welding industry.

To be eligible to apply for the award, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Entering their final year of study in a full-time, minimum 2 year recognized Canadian post-secondary institution in one of the following programs/fields of study:

Welding Technician
Welding Engineering Technology
Welding Engineering Technicians
Welding (Fabrication) Technicians
Welding Specialist Engineering Techniques
Manufacturing Engineering Technology
Welding Engineering
Mechanical, Materials or Civil Engineering with a focus or specialization in welding





Requirements

Complete the online application form in its entirety. You will require the following in order to do so:

  • 2 personal references (cannot be a family member)
  • A written essay (minimum 1,000 words) describing as a minimum:
  1. What has led you to choose this field of study;
  2. Your academic achievements and awards;
  3. Why you believe welding / construction standards are important ;
  4. Any related  volunteer and/or work experience; and,
  5. Your future career goals.
  • A minimum of one (1) letter of recommendation from a supervising faculty member of your  learning institution relating to your activities in welding, your academic performance and suitability for the award.
  • A minimum of one (1) letter of recommendation from a person of the students choosing relating to the student’s activities in welding, his/her character, and suitability for the award.
  • A current official transcript with all available program marks / assessments for the enrolled program of studyWeighting of the academic performance and essay criteria is as follows:

Academic achievement and awards (minimum 85% average) 40

Strength of essay in describing career goals and interest in a career in the industry 10
