Grey County District Women's Institute - Flora Durnin Scholarship
Flora Durnin served as Home Economist in Grey County from 1934 to 1966. She was born on a farm in Ashfield Township in Huron County and graduated from MacDonald Institute in Guelph in 1927. In January 1929 she joined the staff of the Women's Institute Branch of the Ontario Department of Agriculture. She served in several counties, using her car as her office until 1949 when she was given office space at Markdale OMAF. After retiring she cared for her father at their Dungannon home and, following his death in 1969, she resided with a Home Economist friend near Tottenham. She passed away at the age of 81.
The Flora Durnin Grey County WI Award was established in 1953 and the recipients will be chosen by a committee of the Grey County Women's Institute. The Flora Durnin Grey County WI Award is $200 and is awarded to a student, either female or male, living in Grey County, at least 16 years of age, and preparing for Post-Secondary education This Award is distributed from the income earned from an endowed fund held by Community Foundation Grey Bruce.
