Background to the Environmental Forum
The environment is now the number one concern for Canadians and all levels of
government, businesses, organizations and individuals are responding. The Community
Foundation Grey Bruce is no exception.
In 2003 when the Community Foundation Grey Bruce talked to community stakeholders
about how we could focus our work most effectively, the community flagged the
environment as a priority. The Board of Directors of Community Foundation Grey
Bruce agreed and our Environmental Endowed Fund was established through grants
and generous contributors.
Since then, Community Foundation Grey Bruce Environmental Endowed Fund has granted
each year to environmental organizations in Grey and Bruce Counties. With the
research and learning we have undertaken, along with the support of Community
Foundations of Canada, the Community Foundation Grey Bruce has been refining
a strategy to best "play our position" in environmental issues.
We've identified things we can do particularly well: make effective grants, engage
citizens in action, build the capacity of our local environmental organizations
and share knowledge and training.
In 2008, with the help of a grant from Community Foundations of Canada Advisory
Committee, the Community Foundation Grey Bruce has a mandate to build the capacity
of our Environmental Endowed Fund and to partner with organizations to help increase
our ability to address environmental challenges.
Early in 2008, the Community Foundation Grey Bruce proposed to bring together
those interested in the environment to collaborate and present an Environmental
Forum to be held in Grey County but open to anyone who is interested in attending.
A very successful forum was held at Blue Mountain ion November 14 to 16, 2008.
Participants and attendees were enthused about the results. In 2009, a second
Environmental Forum is planned for October 23 & 24, at the CAW Education Centre
in Saugeen Shores.
