First Nation People's Scholarship Fund

Background Information

The First Nations People’s Scholarship Fund was established by an anonymous donor in 2005 to provide financial assistance to enable students from the First Nations in Grey and Bruce to pursue their studies in post secondary education.

Criteria

The income available, from the First Nation People’s Scholarship Fund, is to be distributed to those wishing to further their post secondary education with priority going to:

  • Chippewas of Nawash
  • Saugeen First Nations
  • First Nation’s People living off the reserves in Grey and Bruce Counties
  • Applicant must be registered with a recognized college or university for the upcoming school year.
  • The Community Foundation encourages the participation of other funding agencies, and might consider matching or challenging grants to stimulate such participation.

Selection Procedure

All applications for the First Nations People’s Scholarship will be reviewed after April 15th to determine their eligibility. It is important to fill out the application in full as incomplete applications will be rejected. All eligible applications will be reviewed in concert with John Landen, the Band Chiefs in conjunction and/or education administrators. Funds will be distributed to educational institutions and organizational sponsor only.

Additional information may be requested. Grantees will be required to enter into an agreement with the Community Foundation which sets out the terms of the award.

Note: scholarships will be available for more than one student. Successful candidates will be contacted by a representative of the Community Foundation Grey Bruce.

Requirements

  • Applicants must fill out the following form. Mail 2 copies of the completed application form to the address or fax to the number below
  • A follow-up report is required at the end of the school year outlining accomplishments
  • If the student is not accepted in a course at college/university or if the student drops out of the course, the grant must be returned to Community Foundation Grey Bruce.

Note: applications may be submitted for each year that the student is attending the media course at college/university

Applications will only be processed after all of the following have been received:

  • Signed consent to release and verify information in this application.
  • Application form is complete including information on all other sources of funding applied for or obtained.
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Copy of application or acceptance from Post Secondary Institution.
  • Proof of Aboriginal Ancestry with band number and copy of status card.
  • Copies of any awards, diplomas or other supporting documents.
  • Short essay on why you have chosen this career path-1 page.
  • Copy of transcript for year funded to be submitted at year-end.
  • Students may apply each year.

Additional Criteria Requirements

  • Persons of aboriginal ancestry proceeding into a Post Secondary School Institution in Ontario .
  • Proof of graduation from an Ontario Secondary School or G.E.D. program.
  • Letter of recommendation from Secondary School Representative, or First Nations Education Representative or Post Secondary Education Representative.
  • Involvement in the community with supporting letter of reference.

Selection Procedure

All applications will be reviewed in concert with John Landen, the Band Chiefs in conjunction with their education committee chair. Mr. Landen will act as liaison.

2 copies of your printed proposal and all supporting documentation must be received by April 15, for final consideration.  Review of applications by granting committee will be completed by May 1. Grants will be presented during graduation at the end of June.

Presentation of Awards

The Scholarship Awards will be forwarded to the applicant’s sponsor. Special recognition will be given to the award winners in their community by the Band Chiefs and the Community Foundation Grey Bruce
